Data Governance is a new player in the data game, and in many ascpects, still changing. The Data Governance Institute defines data governance as “a system of decision rights and accountabilities for information-related processes.” This is a step beyond the popular predecessor known also as, "data administration." Shifting from administration to governance widens the scope and includes implications inclusive of aspects of data management including: cost, value, quality, security, privacy, regulatory compliance, and maturity of data management practices.
Prviously the area of administrators and stewards, data management takes on new organizational dimensions with a shift to data goverance. Multiple roles include data owners, data stewards, and data specialists with a growing trend toward appointing data executives – the Chief Data Officer, for example. This new and intense focus on effective data management practices is a positive trend. It brings strong recognition of data as an important corporate asset, and it offers real opportunity for achievement in data management initiatives, investments, priorities, policies, and standards. Data governance is rich with opportunity, but effort is needed to turn opportunity to reality. New visibility, responsibilities, and accountabilities bring a demand for new processes, practices, and skills.
